Tammy Duckworth Inspires at Sixth Power Luncheon

Attendees at LCDW's Sixth Power Luncheon on September 16 were treated to an inspiring and moving presentation by Tammy Duckworth, director
of the Illinois Department of Veterans' Afairs and an Iraq War veteran (view photos).

Ms. Duckworth spoke about her experiences in Iraq and her conviction that the most important task now
is to provide funding for appropriate care for returning veterans. “I don’t think the country understands the true cost of how much we’re going to spend in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan,” she said. “I think it’s a reflection of the lack of planning for this war that there was no plan for what we’d do with our veterans when they came home.”

Tammy DuckworthAddressing the meaning of patriotism, Ms. Duckworth said, "When you join the military, you give up your right of freedom of speech. That does not mean the rest of us should not question." She said that when people accuse war objectors of lacking patriotism, "It is the cheapest of shots, and it just detracts from the issues at hand."

Lake County Democratic Women thanks Ms. Duckworth for taking the time to speak at the luncheon and share her experiences and insight. Many in attendance felt that this was the most powerful presentation yet at these always-rewarding events.
